Christmas, originally a winter survival festival celebrating the return of light, has been adapted globally, including in tropical regions like Sri Lanka, where it feels out of place. The celebration's roots lie in ancient traditions like Saturnalia and Yule, which were rebranded by Christians. Colonization brought these traditions to Sri Lanka, where they were adopted despite the local climate. Unlike colder regions, Sri Lankans do not need a winter festival for emotional well-being, focusing instead on their own significant celebrations like Avurudu in April. Ultimately, while the science may not align with the local context, the social aspect of gathering and celebrating remains valuable.
